Hey Curly Sisters!

A dear sister friend recently asked me to participate in her radio show. (That's right. New things are on the rise!) I happen to mention the idea of branding myself as a hair-a-pist. She loved the idea. She chimed in stating the ways I am that for her and so many. As awesome as this sounded, something still didn't sit right with me.

I struggled with the idea of associating myself with a term that is reserved for licensed stylists. Yes, I know. Hair-a-pist isn't a "real" term. One thing about me, I never associate myself with something that doesn't fully describe me. I am very clear to state that I am not a licensed stylist. While I had relaxed hair for many years, my true passion is curly hair. Natural hair.

Unbothered.

Free flowing.

Straight out the scalp.

It dawned on me. Curl-apist. It resonates loudly with me. I define it. My approach to natural hair advice is question-based. As previously stated, I do not tell you what products to purchase and use. I simply provide guidance. I want to arm you with the best decision making choices for YOU.

Not me. You.

Curl Sister, my desire is for you to not be frustrated by following every trend and using every product. What works for me may not work for you. My haircare needs are not your needs.

My revised vision: Curl-apist for the every day woman

By now, SURELY you have heard all about The CROWN Act. Hair discrimination is a reality. Whether overt or covert, discrimination against natural hairstyles commonly associated with a specific race or nationality occurs in the workplace, education, and let's face it....every day life.

If you are new to the conversation, here are a few baseline things you should know.

  1. The CROWN Act stands for Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair

  2. The federal bill (Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair Act of 2019 or the CROWN Act of 2019) passed the House (H.R.5309) on September 21, 2020.

  3. The federal bill was introduced to the Senate (S.3167) on January 8, 2021.

  4. As of March 1, seven states and sixteen localities have passed The CROWN Act. That's right! You may be covered by The CROWN Act in your area.

  5. In 2020, twenty five states introduced the legislature. Unfortunately, it did not pass.

  6. At the forefront of the fight, The CROWN Coalition is an alliance of organizations, including founding members Dove, National Urban League, Color Of Change, and Western Center on Law and Poverty.

For a full listing of supporting organizations and lawmakers, I encourage you to visit www.thecrownact.com. You will find several ways to get involved including signing the petition and contacting your legislators.

My curly sisters, share your story. Think you don't have one? Share that! All truth needs to be heard.

Update: As of 3/5/2021, Connecticut has passed The CROWN Act. Eight states down!

I know, right?

A hair-a-pist.

I never considered a title for the advice I have provided to friends, family and strangers regarding natural haircare. A dear friend recently pinpointed what I do.

Ladies (and gentlemen???).... I am a hair-a-pist.

I do my best to provide advice on haircare. I don't aim to tell you want to do. I aim to guide you to make the best decision for yourself. It is always about guidance.

This revelation has come right on time. I struggled to pinpoint my view for blogging. Do I REALLY want to be another woman sharing my personal hair journey? I guess. However, I want something more. Now, a hair-a-pist? THIS intrigues me.

Need advice on your natural hair? I am here for you. Do I know everything? No. Do I research and have the ability to reach out to hair stylists I know and trust for advice? Yes.

My vision: Hair-a-pist for the every day woman

Let's get to it. Your haircare needs matter. What's on your head effects what's in your mind. Let's take the guess work and second guessing out of your haircare routine.
